Here is a recipe for a homemade whole wheat bread that has a soft interior that is perfect for making sandwiches or toast!

Homemade Whole Wheat Bread

Special Equipment


Ingredients

  1. 4 cups whole wheat flour (plus more for dusting)

  2. 1 tbsp yeast

  3. 1 tsp salt

  4. 2 tsp sugar

  5. 2 tbsp olive oil

  6. 1 ¾ cups warm water



Directions

Step 1

Add the yeast and sugar to the warm water and allow the yeast to bloom for 5 minutes. Then, mix in the olive oil.


Step 2

In a large bowl, mix the whole wheat flour with the salt. Then add the yeast mixture and fold until it turns into a dough. Next, flour a surface and knead the dough for 5 minutes, or until it is soft and does not stick to your fingers.


Step 3

Coat a bowl with olive oil, and place the kneaded dough in it. Then cover it with a clean towel and set it in a warm area to rise for 30 minutes.


Step 4

Once the bread has risen for the first time, punch it down to release the air. Then, coat a loaf pan with olive oil and set it aside. Knead and shape the dough to fit the loaf pan, place it in, and allow it to rise for another hour, or until it has doubled in size.


Step 5

Preheat the oven to 350°F (180°C). Once heated, place the bread in the oven and allow it to bake for 30 - 35 minutes, or until the base of the loaf pan sounds hollow when tapped.


Step 6

Allow to cool and enjoy!
